Professional biography

Born in Essex in 1973 and of Welsh parentage, taurean John was educated at Branfil Primary School and the Coopers’ Company and Coborn School in Upminster. After winning the Old Boys’ Essay prize and completing an apprenticeship to the Master of the Coopers’ Company he became a Freeman of the City of London and a member of the Worshipful Company of Coopers.

He studied Veterinary Medicine at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge from 1991-1997 gaining a merit in Animal Husbandry, Reproduction and Animal Health. A keen rugby player he represented the University rugby club for all 6 years, playing for the under-21s, LX Club and was a member of three victorious Cambridge Varsity match Blues squads from 1994-1996. John also gained honours with the Welsh Students squad in 1995 and represented the Welsh Exiles several times. In addition to his studies and rugby John also became a member of the Kitten and Hawks Clubs and was invited to join the Ferretz dining society.

After graduating John worked at Fenton Vets - a mixed practice in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. He played rugby for Narberth RFC and developed an interest in equine practice.

From 2001-2003 John worked for Rossdale and Partners in Newmarket, developing his experience especially in equine anaesthesia, imaging and lameness investigation. He also earned a DeNiro’s Nitespot loyalty card whilst in Newmarket.

In September 2003 he returned to Pembrokeshire to work for Fenton Vets again, with a view to developing the equine side of the business alongside his erstwhile colleague and college friend Graham Fowke. Together they started Cotts Farm Equine Clinic in October 2005, which became an RCVS-accredited tier 3 Equine hospital in early 2010.

Professional interests include the treatment of performance horses, especially showjumpers, and lameness investigation.

Hobbies and interests include watching rugby (he has now gracefully retired from playing), running, hillwalking and rock climbing, skiing, scuba diving and fishing, especially for the elusive Bass. John enjoys occasional horse riding and social (very social) golf and cricket. He has a love of the countryside especially the sea, and finds the poetry and prose of Dylan Thomas inspiring. He plays the piano in the style of Les Dawson.
