6/1/10: Laser surgery at Cotts
Our new Dornier diode laser arrived at the beginning of December 2009. This has allowed us to start carrying out standing wind operations, such as Hobday’s procedure, and the surgical removal of skin tumours like sarcoids and melanomas.
We’ve already had a number of cases requiring sarcoid removal, some able to be carried out standing with heavy sedation, others with larger tumours and/or inaccessible places like the belly and groin needing a general anaesthetic. It is also a very successful way of removing melanomas from grey horses, although as with all treatments it is not suitable for every case. We’ve also successfully carried out quite a number of Hobday’s procedures on roarers under standing sedation using the laser down the scope. The end result is the same effectiveness as a traditional open Hobday but there’s no ugly throat wound to contend with after the operation and the horse is back in work slightly quicker.
If you are one of our own clients and might be interested in laser removal of sarcoids, melanomas, other skin tumours, or upper airway surgery like Hobday’s procedure then please call the clinic and speak to Richard Coomer. If Cotts isn’t your regular vets and you may or may not have been here before then likewise feel free to call to discuss the case. However, you will need to speak to your regular vet to arrange referral before we can make an appointment.
