Hospital-based internships for vets
We are seeking two veterinary graduates for our 12 month equine internship programme, starting July 2021. The position is based in our RCVS-accredited Tier 3 Equine Hospital in South West Wales, the only one of its type in Wales. Situated on the edge of a coastal National Park and area of outstanding natural beauty, the practice provides ambulatory services to Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, south Ceredigion, Swansea and the Vale of Glamorgan. It also provides a referral service for emergency surgery and intensive care, and all elective internal medicine, orthopaedic and surgical cases. Cotts provides veterinary cover for nearby Ffos Las racecourse.
The practice currently employs 16 full time veterinary surgeons including 2 board-certified specialists, one in surgery and one in internal medicine. During their internship our hospital vets live on site and work a 1 in 2 out-of-hours rota. We also provide regular in-house training seminars and fund 5 days of external CPD. The aim is that after 12 months our interns are equipped with the skills and experience required to work competently in first line equine veterinary practice, or pursue further Specialist training. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and close team. Further details about the practice, staff and facilities can to be found on our website.
During their internship, our hospital vets work under the supervision and direction of senior vets at Cotts Farm and are given considerable and increasing responsibility for inpatients within the hospital, but do not bear direct responsibility to the client for these cases. Working with this considerable safety net allows young vets to increase their knowledge and experience safely.
Cotts aims to foster these skills and experience partly through increasing responsibility, through intern seminars and other formal learning, and through increasing ‘solo’ exposure to first opinion cases.
We always ask for potential candidates to come and see practice with us, preferably for 2 weeks. We like to take this opportunity to meet you, work with you and get to know you as a person. Someone who wants to learn and is happy to get involved with all stages of the process is ideal – from helping hold horses, cleaning and scrubbing into surgery.
Please download and complete the application form and confidentiality agreement, and email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Applications should include your current CV with recent photograph and letter of intent.
Two references should be supplied and candidates may also provide supplementary letters of recommendation or any other information they feel pertinent. We will then contact you to arrange a mutually convenient time to see practice, during which time you will also be interviewed.
