Equine Veterinary Nurse / Veterinary Assistant – Narberth




Full-time Veterinary Technician required at Cotts Equine Veterinary practice based in Narberth, South Wales as part of Wales’ first and only Equine Hospital team.


We are looking for a keen, well-motivated, methodical individual to join our expanding first- opinion and referral practice in South Wales to support the veterinary team. The successful candidate will be based at our practice in Narberth; one of our three clinics along the South Wales corridor.


Key responsibilities


Veterinary Nursing Assistant providing support to the vets with horse holding and technician. You may also be required to carry out tasks occasionally at our other practice locations in Swansea and Cowbridge.


  • Assisting vets with X-rays, including private clients and yards, sales and stud work. This may be plate or horse holding.

  • All aspects of horse holding, for example for : Scans, Bloods, Castrations, Bandage change, Abscesses and sarcoid treatment, Dentals, Scopes

  • Scrubbing horse areas and joints where necessary in preparation for injections.

  • Preparing horse/equipment for veterinary inspection/veterinary procedures and lameness examinations.

  • Trotting up when requested.

  • Assisting vets in other procedures that may include clipping and prepping.

  • Liaising with the vet in charge of the case at any time regarding any concerns you may have to the needs/welfare/safety of that horse. Internal duties may include:

  • Care of medical equipment, to include setting up, shutting down, handling of equipment e.g., Endoscopy, Ultrasound and Radiography machines.

  • Cleaning and, where indicated, sterilising equipment, including EndoscopesVet stitch kitsCastration kitsTubes/catheters etc o Dentistry equipment

  • Reporting damage or malfunction with equipment and taking out of use until repaired.

  • Maintaining endoscopes and sending off for repair.

  • Ordering equipment, where necessary, and recording as appropriate.

  • Record keeping, including equipment cleaning, maintenance, purchasing and disposal.

  • Ensuring your work area is clean and cupboards are well stocked by checking regularly throughout the day.

  • Checking PPE Health and Safety equipment as necessary.

  • Maintaining and cleaning of hospital stables. You will never be expected to carry out a task without supervision for which you do not have sufficient training. You will need to work closely with the other receptionists, equine nurses, as well as with the vets across the three clinics. Veterinary practice is varied and can sometimes be unpredictable, therefore a flexible approach is imperative. Working hours Normal working hours are 8.30am-5.30pm Monday to Friday. Any authorised overtime will be paid at your normal hourly rate. You may also be required to join the out of hours rota. In addition, you may be required to occasionally attend our two other clinics in Cowbridge and Swansea. Transport is provided. Holidays: You are entitled to 20 days holiday per year including the eight statutory bank holidays. You will be entitled to statutory sick leave and parental leave/time off for dependants. Salary Experience based.
